GUtech University students first to receive professional sustainable development talks
Veolia, the world leader in optimized environmental resources management conducted a knowledge transfer session at the German University of Technology Oman (GUtech) on waste management and water losses.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Veolia aims to raise students’ awareness on water conservation and environmental protection and also raise the profile of water and waste sectors among young graduates.
Discussions at the seminar aimed to provide engineering students with international expertise on methodologies to reduce water technical and commercial losses, leak detection techniques, waste management cycles and waste to energy process.
Commenting on the occasion Xavier Joseph, CEO, Gulf Countries, Veolia said: “Through this initiative we wish to develop the next generation of innovators dedicated to water and environment. Strengthening our relationship with Omani universities and the wider local community further cements our commitment to building the Middle East as world-class hub for waste management and recycling and recovery of resources.”
“As a result of the last two years working for Seureca in Oman, the consulting engineering subsidiary of Veolia, I have increased my knowledge, through technical training courses provided by the company, in addition day to day interaction with international water experts”, said Saif Al Shaqsi, Project Engineer, Seureca Muscat.
“Waste treatment, sea water desalination and green energy is part of the Bachelor of Environmental Engineering programme at GUtech. In addition to our teaching and regular excursions of the Department of Engineering, we are pleased to speakers from Veolia at our university. We want to raise awareness about water scarcity and environmental issues and are happy to link our students with professionals in the Gulf region” said Prof. Dr. Najah Mhanna, Head of the Department of Engineering.
Veolia has designed, built and currently operates the Sur desalination plant that is scheduled to produce its 100th million cubic meter of drinking water in December 2014 in Oman. The organization also supports the Sultanate of Oman’s Public Authority for Electricity and Water through a 5-year co-management contract with a commitment towards improving the water service to the benefits of the Omani population and environment. Veolia is also the strategic partner of Majis Industrial Services Company for the operation and maintenance of water and waste water infrastructure of the industrial port of Sohar.
Among students from GUtech, attendees also included senior representatives from public and environmental authorities such as the Public Authority for Electricity and Water and Majis Industrial Services Company.
